Montressa Tripps, Alum 2019 - I have always been drawn to caring for others and finding the silver lining in even the most challenging circumstances. It was this inherent nurturing nature, coupled with a profound desire to make a positive impact, that led me to embark on a journey in social work.

Upon graduating, I eagerly stepped into the world of social work as an overdose education and naloxone distribution outreach advocate worker at Baltimore's local behavior health authority organization (BHSB). Here, I found my passion for helping individuals facing struggles related to addiction, mental health, and other critical issues. Over time, I seized opportunities for growth, eventually ascending to supervisory positions, and now, as a Community Education Coordinator, I strive to equip Baltimore City communities with valuable Mental Health First Aid training and resources.

My alma mater, Morgan, played a pivotal role in shaping my career trajectory. It bestowed upon me essential skills like organization, effective communication, critical thinking, and empathetic, active listening through a culturally competent, person-centered lens. These skills have proven invaluable in my journey as a social worker, enabling me to connect authentically with those I serve and support.

To me, urban social work signifies more than just a profession; it is a profound commitment to the communities we serve. It means engaging directly with individuals, offering vital services, and amplifying the voices of those who often go unheard. It is about being a catalyst for positive change, fostering hope and empowerment among those facing life's adversities.

As with any path, my journey in social work has not been without challenges. The transition from academia to practice presented its own set of hurdles. Yet, with patience and determination, I learned to navigate the complexities of the field. I sought out supportive relationships, conducted thorough research, and embraced a proactive approach to effecting change.

In this demanding profession, balancing work and personal life is paramount. Prioritizing self-care, practicing mindfulness, and continuously seeking opportunities for growth have been essential aspects of maintaining my well-being and effectiveness as a social worker.

Looking ahead, I envision a future where I contribute to the greater good on a broader scale. My aspirations include creating generational wealth to leave a lasting legacy for future generations. I yearn to expand my horizons by learning a new language, empowering me to connect with diverse populations more effectively. Armed with a doctorate, I aim to embark on a journey as a traveling Social Worker and motivational speaker, bridging gaps in services for underserved communities and advocating for a brighter, inclusive tomorrow.

As a proud Morgan alumnus, giving back to the School of Social Work holds a special place in my heart. I plan to invest my time, resources, and expertise in supporting the institution that helped shape my career. Participating in resource fairs, collaborating with various departments, and actively engaging with the community will be my way of nurturing the growth and strength of future social work leaders.

In the pursuit of this vision, I am filled with an enduring passion to drive positive change, empower individuals and communities, and contribute my part in making the world a better place for all.
