BSW Social Justice Symposium/Senior Seminar
The Morgan State University School of Social Work is ecstatic to celebrate the remarkable success of the 2nd Annual Social Justice Leadership Training Academy Symposium. This prestigious event was held on Saturday, April 27th, 2024, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Schaefer Engineering Building's Schaefer Auditorium, drawing a rich tapestry of attendees ranging from university affiliates, current students, and distinguished alumni.
The Symposium marks a cornerstone event for the School, which prides itself on nurturing future leaders in social work. The Social Justice Leadership Training Academy, integral to the BSW and MSW programs, focuses on molding students into champions of equity, skilled organizers, passionate advocates, and spirited activists. Supported by the generous grant from the McKenzie Scott Foundation, the Academy plays a pivotal role in honing students' skills and supporting their research efforts, especially within the realm of social justice in urban communities.
A notable highlight of the symposium was the presentation of research by nine Social Justice Fellows from the Academy, a testament to the progressive academic environment fostered at Morgan State University. In addition, around forty students from the BSW Program displayed their academic prowess through Senior Seminar project posters and an insightful presentation on the global warming crisis, reaffirming the university's commitment to international issues and social responsibility.
The event was further enhanced by the wisdom shared by Keynote Speaker Dr. Andrey L. Bundley and Luncheon Speaker Mr. Darryl Green. Both speakers delved into the intricacies of social justice, the pursuit of advancing equity, and the pivotal role of urban scholarship, energizing a new wave of social work professionals.
The symposium was not just a gathering but a celebration of the fierce spirit of social work that pulses through the heart of Morgan State University. As the School of Social Work looks ahead, it stands proud of its students and faculty who embody the drive for justice and change, demonstrating the power and passion of social work. This event has set a dynamic stage for future symposiums, and Morgan State University anticipates the ongoing impact its students and alumni will have as they step forward as the next leaders in the vital field of social justice.
