National Transportation Center

Research

The SMARTER Center’s research activities will focus on providing immediate and near-immediate implementation capabilities for regional stakeholders in government, industry, and the general public. To that end, the center’s researchers will explore and disseminate novel applications for emerging technologies to strengthen the region’s transportation network.

Each of the Center’s ongoing research initiatives aligns with one or more of its four research thrusts: Equity, Mobility Innovations (connected, autonomous, and electric vehicles), Multimodal policy and planning, Urban and Rural accessibility. In addition, SMARTER's research agenda aligns with the US Department of Transportation's current strategic plan, supporting the creation of a more accessible, sustainable transportation network in the Mid-Atlantic and beyond.
