History of Career Closet
Earlene Goodson entered the halls of Morgan State University in the late 70's in pursuit of a Social Work degree. During her college days, Ms. Goodson was very active and always found herself in helping roles. She accepted her first position as an office clerk in the Office of Financial Aid and later transitioning to the Center for Career Development. Ms. Goodson served as the Associate Director and cherished each moment assisting students with their career journey.
In 2014, Ms. Goodson reached out to the MSU On-Campus Alumni Chapter and proposed creating a Career Closet that would "level the playing field" by providing professional clothing to MSU students so they could make a great first impression. The MSU On-Campus Alumni Chapter accepted the proposal and immediately started collecting clothing and purchasing clothing fixtures to outfit a small office space. News spread across campus and Target® offered to lend a helping hand, in July 2015, volunteers arrived remodeling a new space that tripled the size of the closet; they outfitted the room with new fixtures and new clothing donations. In August 2015, Ms. Goodson witnessed her dream become a reality when the doors of the new Career Closet were opened to its first students.
Ms. Goodson devoted 47 years to Morgan State University serving in a variety of roles. She retired in December 2019. She leaves behind an amazing legacy. We are grateful for her vision and continue to honor the blueprint she left behind. As of September 2021, 1395 of MSU students have received professional wear from the Career Closet.
The Career Closet, created by Morgan Alum Ms. Earlene Goodson c/o 1982, provides free professional career attire for current Morgan State students for occasions such as interviews, and professional events. The Career Closet is generously supported by donations from Morgan State Alumni, community members, and local employers.
Thank you, Ms. Earlene Goodson for your vision.
In October 2021, The Career Closet settled into its new location in Tyler Hall. The Career Closet was upgraded to a stylish boutique fitted with modern industrial fixtures, complete with fitting rooms and a full-size jewelry case. The Career Closet is primarily operated by students from our Family Consumer Sciences program. This allows students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the retail industry.
In Spring 2022, the Career Closet will expand its services and begin offering programs. Program offerings will include: Hair & Makeup Tutorials, Five Ways to Tie a Tie, How to Shop on A Budget, and much, much more! All led by students.
