Center for Career Development
FAQs
The Career Closet is a donation-based resource located in the Center for Career Development that provides students with professional attire for upcoming interviews and professional events. We accept new professional clothing from Morgan Alumni, faculty, staff, and community members. The Career Closet is set up as a stylish boutique and is completely operated by students and volunteers.
The Career Closet is designed to support Morgan State University students who have a financial need by providing access to professional business attire. This resource is intended to help students make a positive impression during career-related events such as interviews, career fairs, networking receptions, and other professional occasions. The Career Closet is exclusively available to students who may not have the means to purchase professional clothing on their own, ensuring they have the attire necessary to pursue their career goals confidently.
At the Center for Career Development, we rely on the honor system to determine financial need. We do not ask students to provide financial documents to access the Career Closet. We trust that students will use this resource only if they genuinely have a financial need and cannot afford to purchase professional attire on their own. Our goal is to ensure that the Career Closet is available to those who truly require assistance, so we ask that students be mindful not to take this resource away from others who might need it more.
To qualify for access to the Career Closet, students must meet the following criteria:
- Currently enrolled: Students must be actively enrolled at Morgan State University.
- Active Handshake account: Students need to have an active account on Handshake, our online job portal.
- First-time visitors: The Career Closet is available only to students visiting for the first time during their academic journey.
- Event-specific need: The attire obtained from the Career Closet must be used for career-related events such as interviews, career fairs, networking receptions, conferences, or other professional occasions. Students should be prepared to show proof of an upcoming event, such as an interview invitation or event registration.
- Demonstrated financial need: The Career Closet is intended for students who have a financial need and may not be able to afford professional attire on their own. We rely on the honor system and trust that students will use this resource only if they truly require assistance.
These qualifications help ensure that the Career Closet can effectively support students in need as they prepare for important professional opportunities.
The Career Closet is managed solely by interns from our Fashion Merchandising program, and the hours of operation are built around their schedules. As a result, students must schedule an appointment to visit the Closet in advance. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate last-minute visits or guarantee availability for specific sizes, as our inventory is limited and varies based on donations. We recommend planning ahead and scheduling your appointment as early as possible to ensure you have what you need for your event.
Due to limited funds and our commitment to reaching as many students as possible, students are allowed to visit the Career Closet only once during their academic journey at Morgan State University. During your visit, you may select up to three items of professional attire. This policy ensures that we can provide assistance to the greatest number of students who truly need it.
We recommend checking out local thrift stores, consignment shops, and discount retailers. Additionally, Morgan State University hosts periodic JCPenney Suit Up Events, where you can purchase professional clothing at significantly reduced prices. These events offer great deals on suits, dress shirts, blouses, shoes, and accessories, making it easier for you to build your professional wardrobe without breaking the bank.

With a campus of over 8,000 students, we are very limited in the number of students that we are able to help. It is our goal to provide assistance to as many students as possible and to offer a nice selection to choose from. To do that, we need to maintain size variety and style, as every student is not the same. We provide services to students to improve career outcomes but we would not be able to accomplish our goals without your clothing donation. Consider making a donation.
- All clothing must be new with tags
- No stains, tears, rips, missing buttons, or broken zippers
- We are seeking suits appropriate for interview attire
- Suits should be modern style and purchased within the last three years
Please note: We are very appreciative of all donations; however, we do not have a storage or sorting facility. So it is imperative that the items you donate are able to immediately be displayed/hung in the Career Closet. Unfortunately, we do not have a budget for tailoring or alterations.
- Men's Business Suits (solid, neutral colors-black, grey, navy)
