The Office of Student Success & Retention

Welcome

The Office of Student Success & Retention is here to support undergraduate students throughout their academic journey from matriculation to graduation. We collaborate with all schools and academic support programs at Morgan State University to provide continuous, high-quality support. Our goal is to enhance student retention and persistence by focusing on academic success, early intervention, and systematic tracking. Together, we can help you achieve your educational goals and reach graduation successfully.

First and Second-Year Advising

The Office of Student Success and Retention (OSSR) collaborates with various academic support programs to provide continuous, quality support for undergraduate students from matriculation to graduation. OSSR focuses on increasing student retention rates and persistence to graduation through early intervention and systematic tracking of undergraduate students.

New Student Orientation(NSO)

The Bear Necessities New Student Orientation (NSO) is a mandatory program designed to facilitate a smooth transition into university life for incoming freshmen. The in-person orientation spans three days and two nights, offering immersive experiences, while virtual sessions are available for those unable to attend on campus. NSO provides essential information about academic expectations, campus resources, and community engagement.

First Year Events

To support first-year students, Morgan State University organizes various events, including:

• Matriculation Convocation: An official welcoming ceremony where faculty, staff, and students greet and welcome new students entering the University for the first time. Attendance is mandatory for all Morgan freshmen and sophomores.

• Founders Day Convocation: An annual event recognizing the institution’s journey from its charter in 1867 to today, celebrating the many milestones achieved during its existence. Freshmen and sophomores are required to attend.

• Networking Mixers: Opportunities for students to connect with industry professionals, alumni, and potential employers in a relaxed and engaging setting.
