Fire Safety Specialist Ken Burns, a Baltimore native, began his career as a Sprinkler Apprentice with Improvements International, LLC in 2006. In addition, he volunteered as a firefighter for the Violetville Volunteer Fire Department. Specialist Burns was hired in 2009 and graduated from the Baltimore County Fire Department's EMS academy in 2010. He was promoted to EMT/Firefighter six months later. After three years as an EMT/Firefighter, Specialist Burns started driving fire engines. The next ten years were spent driving some of Baltimore County's busiest fire engines and attending school to earn various fire inspector certifications and training. In February 2021, Specialist Burns was given the opportunity to oversee his own team of fire suppression inspectors and learn about the private side of fire safety. This was a chance he couldn't pass up, and it propelled him to new heights in his life safety, fire safety, and code enforcement careers. Just four years later, as a Fire Safety Specialist at Morgan State University, he feels he is in the right place, with the right people, and for the right cause.
