Nko Okina Solomon is a dedicated environmental specialist with over 8 years of experience in environmental health and safety (EHS) management. She has adeptly provided solutions to environmental challenges, integrating human health considerations with economic growth and sustainability. Her expertise spans various industries, including oil and gas operations, construction, and beyond, where she has efficiently managed projects and collaborated with teams to achieve organizational goals.
Nko's professional journey includes significant roles such as Environmental Health and Safety Internships at Geiger Brothers LTD and Marshall University EHS Office, where she conducted workplace inspections, ensured regulatory compliance, and developed safety programs. At CHIFY Nigeria Limited, she served as an EHS Management Report/Auditor, providing administrative support, conducting audits, and developing safety plans. Her tenure at TotalEnergies E&P Nigeria as a site environmental engineer and trainer involved environmental investigations, training, and compliance monitoring. Nko has contributed to the field through her research, including publications in esteemed journals such as "Water, Air, and Pollution" and the "Journal of Emerging Trends in Engineering and Applied Science." Her research topics have ranged from detoxifying industrial wastewater using nanoparticles to measuring and modeling biological oxygen demand for brewery wastewater.
Nko's dedication and excellence have been recognized through awards such as the Best Female Graduate in Chemical Engineering at the Federal University of Technology, Yola, and the Best NYSC Corp Member: State Honor Certificate Award in Ebonyi State, Nigeria. Recently, she was honored with the Women of Color Student Award at Marshall University, recognizing her outstanding contributions to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment. An active member of the university community, Nko has been involved in various associations, including the Intercultural Affairs Graduate Assistant, the Center for Africa American Association, the Pan-African Student Association, and the Black United Students Association. Her interests include reading, researching, running, teaching, mentoring, playing the piano, and networking.
Nko Okina Solomon has been nominated for the Women of Color Award due to her remarkable dedication and commitment to promoting multicultural understanding and fostering an inclusive environment. As a graduate student and a mother, Nko has balanced her academic pursuits, achieving a 4.0 GPA in her Environmental Health and Safety program while being an exemplary mother to her two children. Her tenacity, positive attitude, and efforts in promoting unity and acceptance within the university community make her a deserving candidate for this prestigious award. She continues to inspire her children, family members, and colleagues, serving as a role model for women in STEM and beyond.
