Welcome from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Mathematics!

Our department has programs leading to the degrees of:

• Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mathematics
• Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Actuarial Science
• Master of Arts (M.A.) in Mathematics
• Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Industrial and Computational Mathematics (ICM)

Currently, Morgan is the only Historical Black College and University (HBCU) in the nation and the only institution of higher education in the state of Maryland that offers the B.S. degree in Actuarial Science. Also, Morgan is one of the only three HBCUs in the nation that offers a Ph.D. degree in the mathematical sciences. Undergraduate Math majors with a concentration in Mathematics Education may obtain a Masters of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree through the School of Education and Urban Studies (Dual B.S. /B.A. + M.A.T. Program). Thus, our department is well positioned to make contributions to the critical needs of the nation by helping to increase the number of underrepresented minorities obtaining degrees in the mathematical sciences.

Our department offers an excellent and scholarly environment to study mathematics. Our students are actively engaged in undergraduate and graduate research, and some have presented their research at local and national mathematical meetings, conferences, and workshops. Some of our students have also been recognized for their research. In addition, we have a diverse and supportive faculty. They have been recognized for their teaching, consulting, and research. To help stimulate research activity for students and faculty, we have an active bi-weekly research colloquium series consisting of research talks given by local, national and international researchers in the mathematical sciences. Department programs and faculty research have been supported by the National Science Foundation, National Security Agency, Department of Homeland Security, Rutgers University, Maryland Higher Education Commission, Association of American Colleges and Universities, Calculus Consortium, Insurance Society of Baltimore, Travelers Insurance Company, and other organizations. Some graduate students are supported by teaching assistantships and tuition stipends, and funded departmental grants. Long and short term visits to the department by distinguished mathematicians from all over the world are encouraged and supported by the Department and University.

Students, faculty, and numerous visitors are encouraged to interact with our department by taking courses, participating in seminars, attending colloquia, contributing to and attending the annual reunion and fundraiser, and participating in other department activities. Whether you are a prospective faculty member, exchange visitor, postdoctoral fellow, student, or financial donor, you will find our department helpful, accessible, and warm and friendly.
