MA Practicum & Internship

The Practicum/Internship is the experiential field placement course of our degree program. In alignment with the CAS standards, all students must complete a supervised experiential learning opportunity in a higher education or student affairs functional area (or similar non-profit organization). The internship program was designed to provide a structure for the planning and implementation of field experiences for our master's and doctoral students, and to ensure high-quality experiences for both students and collaborating sites. Our interns usually serve at Baltimore-area institutions like Johns Hopkins University, UMBC, Towson University, and CCBC, but have also served at Baltimore City Public Schools and education-focused non-profit organizations. The internship experience provides for the integration and practical application of theory and methods gained through the formal program of study and allows for the development of professional competencies that enhance personal and professional growth. Also, the internship provides on-the-job experiences of reasonable depth and length to strengthen qualifications and broaden the range of career alternatives for the student.

  • Each graduate student is required to complete at least one internship experience. Under the supervision of experienced professionals, internship students work 150 hours over one semester while completing an experiential reflection course.
    • Students doing their first internship register for RDHE685. Students doing their second internship register for RDHE785.
    • WAIVER: Students who have significant work experience are eligible to waive their second internship and instead take an elective. The waiver and the elective selection are determined in conversation with faculty.
  • The internship requires a total student time commitment of at least 150 hours.
    • For fall and spring terms, students will work 10-12 hours per week during a 15-week term.
    • In the summer term, weekly hours are adjusted to complete the 150 minimum required hours.
    • These hours can be online or face-to-face, but at least 50% of the hours need to be in a role that is student-facing.
    • Internships can be paid or unpaid.
    • The internship should be scheduled to begin at the beginning of the academic term.
