How are students selected to participate in the SAAMS Program?
The SAAMS Program believes that an interest in Mathematics, Actuarial Science, and Computer Science, along with the motivation to advance present academic skills, proves to be the greatest catalyst for success among our students. This is true regardless of cultural, geographic, or socio-economic background. As such, we place the greatest weight of our decision on these characteristics as ascertained through personal essays, teacher and counselor recommendations, and telephone interviews. Accepted students would need to also demonstrate adequate progress in their enrolled Mathematics and Computer Science classes. Students with an array of GPAs are selected and are provided the opportunity to succeed in their courses based on the structure and support provided in our program.

After I submit my application, what is the next step?
Students and parents are encouraged to contact the SAAMS Office (443-885-4961 or msusaams@morgan.edu) to receive updates on student applications and whether all documents have been received. After the posted deadline, all completed applications will be reviewed. Students being considered for acceptance will be invited for telephone interviews. After this time, administrative decisions will be made regarding student acceptance, and all applicants will receive a follow-up notice.

If I attended the program in previous years, do I need to submit an application?
ONLY students who participated in last year's program and qualify to enroll in Pre-Calculus (MATH 141) will be able to submit an application. If both conditions are satisfied, the applicant will need to submit a personal essay, an updated school transcript, and PSAT/SAT/ACT test scores, if applicable. Recommendation letters are not required for returning applicants.

When will I be notified if I have been accepted?
All students are notified of final decision by late May. At this time, students and parents will receive forms to confirm the student's acceptance and to finalize their enrollment in the program.

Are there any additional expenses once I have been accepted to the 2022 SAAMS Program?
There are no additional costs or fees associated with the 2022 SAAMS Program.

What other activities will there be in addition to classes?
In addition to their academic classes, students will have the opportunity to engage with university faculty, as well as various professionals in the fields of Mathematics, Actuarial Science, and Computer Science. Students will compete in an Actuarial Science competition with judges from the Actuarial filed. There will also be workshops on various professional development and college preparation topics like admissions and financial aid for college, financial literacy, resume writing, etc. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to go on program-related field trips at least twice during the program.

What happens if I get sick while in the program?
If a student is not well enough to participate in a scheduled activity, the student will be required to visit the campus health center for evaluation. Pending the outcome of this evaluation, a parent/guardian may be asked to pick up the participant. Additionally, students who experience repeated or serious illness will be required to return home for evaluation by their family physician, to obtain written medical clearance from their licensed medical professional.

Under what circumstances would I not receive my full stipend?
The stipend is issued post-program. Only completion of the program ensures the maximum stipend allotted to the student. Other factors that could result in a student having their stipend reduced include, but are not limited to: not completing the program, not participating in activities, tardiness, and misbehavior.
