General Education
General Education Program refers to the Morgan C.O.R.E. or Creating Opportunity to Reach Excellence. C.O.R.E. is an initiative at Morgan State University designed to enhance and integrate the General Education Program as the foundation of a liberal education. The Morgan C.O.R.E. was conceived in respond to current demands to develop, educate and graduate scholars and professionals who can succeed in a diverse, technological, competitive, global and interdependent society. C.O.R.E. will contribute to the development of college educated individuals, who are engaged and informed citizens, and who are sensitive to the cultural and economic context in which they are surrounded.
Campus and Community Leadership. The Morgan C.O.R.E. includes education, business, community, students, and policy leaders with a strong commitment to: (1) liberal education and Morgan’s vision to develop a world-class general education program that empowers students to become informed citizens and; (2) the ability to navigate and succeed in a diverse, technological, competitive, global and interdependent society.
Outcomes that are 1) Based on a Longitudinal Infusion of Essential Learning. Longitudinal infusion of learning outcomes through the curriculum of all academic programs (freshmen through the senior year) is a hallmark of the Morgan C.O.R.E. All academic programs will identify courses in which elements of essential outcomes will be addressed and measured. A longitudinal framework will enable Morgan to study and improve the liberal education processes (inputs, process, and outputs); and document progress and achievements on a continuous basis. 2) Alignment with Institutional, State, and Professional Standards Outcomes of the Morgan C.O.R.E. reflect institutional, state, national and international standards that are essential for liberal education. Morgan C.O.R.E. outcomes are consistent with the mission, vision, and strategic goals of the university; outcomes of the Maryland Higher Education Commission, and Learning Outcomes of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U). The C.O.R.E. leaders will also map the general education curriculum to those of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) to address current P-24 initiatives on college and career readiness.
Reform and Resource Sharing Initiatives that is Campus-Based. The Campus-Based Reform (CBF) will support C.O.R.E. efforts at the college/school and departmental levels. CBF promote collaboration and use of C.O.R.E. resources to ensure that all students in the different disciplines are achieving their learning outcomes. CBR further ensures that colleges, schools, and departments are working on issues of quality and student success through collaborative frameworks to advance and assess essential learning outcomes across disciplinary fields, and in transfer.
Evaluation and Assessment that is Comprehensive in Documenting Progress and Student Success. The C.O.R.E. assessment system will: (1) be systematic, thorough and formalized; (2) be guided by clearly stated goals, objectives, and measurable outcomes and expectations; (3) consist of multiple qualitative and quantitative measures; (4) generate data and information that stimulate reflection and discussion, and inform decisions to improve student learning and all aspects of the general education program; and (4) maintain an archive of assessment reports and reviews.
