Credit for Prior Learning

Morgan State University (MSU) offers students several opportunities to receive undergraduate and graduate credit for knowledge and achievements gained through prior learning experiences. Believing that rigorous professional and/or personal development often occurs in settings outside the traditional classroom, MSU grants Credits for Prior Learning (CPL) to students who demonstrate the academic merit of such experiences. Morgan State University is the premier public urban research university in Maryland, known for its excellence in teaching, intensive research, effective public service and community engagement. Morgan prepares diverse and competitive graduates for success in a global, interdependent society. The main goal of this project is to create a CPL environment to enhance student success.

CPL Initiatives: In spring 2015, Morgan received a $5,000.00 stimulus grant from the American Council on Education (ACE) to: (1) establish a campus-wide committee with key stakeholders for the project; (2) develop policy on credit for prior learning and competency-based education; (3) develop a marketing plan for the policy and initiatives; (4) establish IHE partners and identify professional development opportunities (PDOs) for committee members; and (5) acquire internal and external grants to sustain CPL Initiatives. Morgan State University (MSU) was successful in achieving the aforementioned objectives. The stimulus grant contributed to the offering of the following CPL options: Advanced Placement (AP); International Baccalaureate (IB); College-Level Exam Program (CLEP); and Military Transfer Credits. The stimulus grant also contributed to the offering of the: Institutional Challenge Examinations campus-wide; Competency-Based (CBE) Courses; and foundations for Portfolios.
