Why Study English?
Imagine yourself as an editor, educator, journalist, attorney, lobbyist, business executive, sports information director, publicist, librarian, film executive, president of a university, a scientist, or a professional, technical or creative writer.
Majoring in English isn't just about Shakespeare and Morrison. Here are some great reasons student should consider a degree in English:
- You will become a stronger writer. Regardless of your career path or artistic interests, writing is a skill in high demand in nearly every industry.
- You will strengthen your ability to read critically and write analytically. In the twenty-first-century workplace, employers want young leaders who can think on their feet; studying English helps you get there.
- You will learn to navigate a world of global English. Over 54% of the worldwide web is in English; non-Anglophone nations are now offering university classes conducted in English in response to the globalization of our language and the rise of new English-speaking populations around the world. The skills you acquire will put you in a position to thrive in this complex, multinational, trans-cultural world of English.
- You will take courses that span the historical breadth of literature and culture in Africa, Britain, America, India, the Caribbean, and beyond. Understanding the culture and history of global cultures helps prepare students for a global marketplace, and strengthens cross-cultural communication and empathy.
- You will find that you situate yourself to better explain your world. The challenges of the present lead many to place their faith in technology, science, and economics. Equally important is the ability to articulate values and alternatives, to persuade others to share a common vision. Major tech companies, including Google, actively pursue English majors and others from the humanities who can explain not just how technology works but what it means. Corporations, governments, and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) increasingly ask: how do we communicate better? As an English major, you'll be the one to tell them.
- You will study everything since literature is about the world, and the world includes science, politics, history, religion, philosophy, psychology, economics, music, art, and film.
- Interested in starting your own business? These writing, communicating and critical thinking are skills that will be your strongest assets as you set down your own path.
- Studying the liberal arts and literature teaches you not only to succeed in business, but to strengthen your understanding of the world to help you to thrive as a citizen.
- You want to! Your degree in English will make you valuable to employers and useful to the world, but these benefits are secondary. As with any liberal arts major, the main value of a degree in English is its value for you.
