October 24, 2024

The Department of Advanced Studies, Leadership, and Policy (DASLP) at Morgan State University hosted what may be a record-breaking virtual Open House on Wednesday, October 16, with over 90 potential applicants participating. The session was led by Department Chair Dr. Frim Ampaw and offered detailed insights into the graduate programs within the department.

Dr. Ampaw opened the session by inviting Dr. Wilbur Hicks, Chair of the Admissions/Recruitment Committee, to offer remarks. Dr. Hicks acknowledged the committee members for their efforts in organizing the event: Dr. Rhonda Baylor, Dr. Whitney Johnson, Dr. Roni Ellington, Dr. Virginia Byrne, and Dr. Darryl Williams. Administrative support was provided by Karoline Ruhdorfer.

The Open House began with a welcome from Dr. Glenda Prime, Dean of the School of Education and Urban Studies. Dr. Prime challenged attendees to consider the “Why” behind their research aspirations, emphasizing that their answer would serve as a motivator throughout their academic journey.

Dr. Ampaw delivered a comprehensive presentation on DASLP's graduate programs, detailing the degrees offered and available financial aid opportunities. Program-specific information was provided by program directors: Dr. Camika Royal (Urban Educational Leadership), Dr. Steve Mobley (Higher Education & Student Affairs), Dr. Whitney Johnson (Mathematics & Science Education), Dr. Myrtle Dorsey (Community College Leadership), and Dr. Frim Ampaw (Assessment, Evaluation, and Research & Comparative and International Education). Dr. Darryl Williams, Director of the Educational Administration program, also presented and shared insights as a member of the Admissions/Recruitment Committee.

A highlight of the Open House was the Student/Scholar Panel, where current students shared their experiences at Morgan and encouraged potential applicants to join the DASLP community. Panelists included Briana Ross (Urban Education), Gregory Dendy (Higher Education), Jennifer Joyner (Community College Leadership), Olisa Menakaya (Science Education), and Jade Shelton (Educational Administration).

The event concluded with program-specific Break-Out sessions, allowing attendees to interact directly with program directors and provide contact information for further engagement.

The DASLP Open House was a great success, marking another milestone in the department’s outreach to prospective scholars eager to pursue graduate education at Morgan State University.
