Dr. Celeste Chavis appointed to the Baltimore Regional Transit Commission
Dr. Celeste Chavis, professor and chair in the Department of Transportation and Urban Infrastructure Studies, was appointed to the Baltimore Regional Transit Commission (BRTC) by Mayor Brandon Scott.
Established in 2023 by Chapter 540, the BRTC plays a crucial role in shaping the future of transit in the Baltimore region. Comprising representatives from various sectors, including local government, transportation, industry, business, transit advocacy, and labor organizations, the commission was formed as part of recommendations from the Baltimore Regional Transit Governance and Funding Workgroup.
The BRTC's mission is to address the longstanding need for local stakeholders to have a meaningful influence on the planning, construction, operation, and funding of the regional transit network. The BRTC will provide input, advice, and support for the operations of the Maryland Department of Transportation - Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT-MTA) core service network in the Baltimore region. The commission holds monthly meetings open to the public, fostering transparency and community engagement in the decision-making process.
