Boren Awards

Boren Awards, is an initiative of the National Security Education Program, that provides unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. All applicants must be a U.S. citizen at the time of application.

Boren Awards funding in the 2021 application cycle may be applied to programs starting as early as June 1, 2021 or as late as March 1, 2022.

Boren Awards Maximum Award Amounts:

• 8-11 weeks: $8,000 for a summer program (STEM students only)
• 12-24 weeks: $10,000 
• 25-52 weeks: $20,000 

Boren Fellowships Maximum Award Amounts:

• 8-11 weeks: $12,000
• 25-36 weeks: $20,000
• 37-52 weeks: $24,000

Boren Fellows have the option to apply for up to $12,000 for domestic summer intensive language courses. If requested, the maximum total combined domestic and overseas award amount is $30,000.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go by offering awards to U.S. undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints.

The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.

The program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State. This is a program of the U.S. Department of State, administered by the Institute of International Education.

The application period for the 2021 GILMAN International Scholarship is now open.

2020-2021 Application Dates

Students can study and intern abroad during the spring, summer, fall or academic year term

Please be aware that the application deadline is in Pacific Time (PT) and take into consideration the applicable time difference as you prepare to submit your application.

Cycle 1

Cycle 1 is now closed for applicants whose programs start from December 1, 2020, to October 31, 2021. This cycle encompasses Winter 2020, Spring 2021, Summer 2021, Fall 2021, and Academic Year 2021-2022 programs. Please be aware that the application and advisor certification deadlines are in Pacific Time and take into consideration any time difference as you prepare to submit your application.

Online Application Opens: Mid-August 2019
Application Submission Deadline (online application, including transcripts): October 5, 2020 | 11:59 p.m. PT

Cycle 2

Cycle 2 will open in mid-January 2020 for applicants whose programs that start from May 1, 2021 to April 31, 2022. This cycle encompasses Summer 2021, Fall 2021, Academic Year 2021-2022, Winter 2021, and Spring 2022 programs. Gilman-McCain Scholarship

Gilman-McCain Scholarship is for Undergraduate Children of Active Duty Service Members. The application is currently open for students who are studying/interning during January 2021 - October 2021. 

The U.S. Department of State's Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for undergraduate child dependents of active duty service members to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. Developed under the framework of the State Department's Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, the John McCain International Scholarship for the Children of Military Families (Gilman-McCain Scholarship) is open to eligible students enrolled at accredited U.S. colleges and universities who receive any type of Title IV federal financial aid.

Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship

Hosted by CIEE: Council on International Educational Exchange and the Penn Center for Minority Serving Institutions, the Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship program provides scholarships for the most financially challenged students from the nation's nearly 600 MSIs. Each year for the next three years, the scholarship funds will cover 100 percent of program fees and travel costs for 10 students from MSIs. Each cohort of 10 students will take part in a summer study abroad program designed to enhance their leadership and intercultural skills in one of three locations: London (summer 2017), Cape Town (summer 2018),  London (summer 2019), and Cape Town (summer 2020). Study abroad scholarships will be awarded annually based on a combination of financial need, academic achievement, and nominations from students' MSI presidents.

Eligibility Requirements:

• Be a current undergraduate freshman or sophomore attending a Minority Serving Institution
• Be Federal Pell Grant eligible
• Have a minimum GPA 3.00
• Reside in the U.S. with student status or be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or permanent resident.
• Submit a complete application no later than February 14, 2021

Critical Language Scholarship

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is part of a U.S. government effort to dramatically expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critical foreign languages. This intensive language and cultural immersion program for American undergraduate and graduate students runs for eight to ten weeks each summer at over twenty sites abroad. The program covers the equivalent of a full year of college-level language study in fourteen critical languages. Students of diverse disciplines and majors at the undergraduate and graduate levels are encouraged to apply!

Quick Tips for Finding Grants & Scholarships

Here are some tips for finding study abroad grants and scholarships:

• Explore financial aid options specific to your study abroad program
• Check with the government of the country you want to study abroad in -- some give financial support to international students
• Visit your financial aid office, study abroad office, and foreign language departments to ask about potential funding sources
• Ask your advisor if there are any scholarships specific to your major
• Check local organizations like Sons of Italy chapters, German clubs, Hispanic heritage groups, Chinese American associations, etc.
• Apply for federal financial aid -- many students do not realize that government grants and loans may used toward study abroad. You can fill out the application, known as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA, online at the US Department of Education FAFSA website
