We departed two days after Morgan's commencement. It was over 95-degrees when students walked across the stage to receive their diplomas on Saturday, May 21. Thankfully, that Monday morning the weather was ideal for us when we met at Morgan’s campus to head to Dulles International Airport to catch our flight.

After our first days in Lima, we flew to Cusco, Peru. This city is known for once being the capital of the Incan Empire. Cusco is situated along the Andes mountains of South America. Negotiating around the mountains meant more turbulence than normal for flights.

The fifth day of our tour was our last day in Peru. The travels through Cusco were very strenuous, especially as our bodies acclimated to the increased altitude. It’s important to keep in mind that Machu Picchu is a few thousand feet lower than the City of Cusco. Upon returning to Cusco last evening, we immediately felt the difference in the altitude.

Day six was exclusively a travel day! The first five days of the tour were spent in Peru. However, the remainder of the tour was in Ecuador and its province - the Galapagos Islands.

After a successful concert in Cotacachi, Peru, the group returned to Quito, the capital city of Ecuador. We learned from our Ecuadorian guide that Ecuador is known as the “land of volcanoes.”  In a country the size of Colorado, there are as many as 55 volcanoes in the country, many of them still active. We also learned that Quito is the highest capital city in the world at a height of over nine-thousand square-feet above sea level!

Tuesday, May 31, day nine of our tour, was our first full day in Quito, the capital city of over three million residents. We slept well in our Quito hotel, which were the smallest on the tour. Even in the most cosmopolitan city of Ecuador, guests were still admonished to not throw toilet paper in the toilets. This was because the diameters of the pipes in Ecuador and Peru are much smaller and cannot handle much paper in the lines.
