Overview
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), one of the 27 institutes and centers of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is dedicated to understanding the causes, consequences, and treatment of substance use disorders. The NIDA Undergraduate Research Internship Program (URIP) aims to further train, mentor, and prepare current undergraduate students with strong interests in STEM for a career in addiction research.
The NIDA URIP aims to further train, mentor, and prepare current undergraduate students with strong interests in STEM for a career in addiction research. This will be facilitated by research internships and mentoring by NIDA IRP scientists with the objective of fostering a deep drive and passion for addiction science in students that will bridge their future education and career
choices. The internship may include laboratory experiments, data collection, data analysis, participation in lab meetings, interaction with research participants, manuscript preparation, literature reviews, and other activities, in accordance with current safety and COVID-related policies. In addition, it is expected that interns will deliver a formal presentation on their
research project towards the end of the program.
Compensation: A monthly stipend will be provided to each intern. Student stipend amounts are determined by education level completed. Interns are expected commit to working between 6-10 hours per week during the academic year depending on the intern’s course load, exam schedule, and other responsibilities.
Timeframe: Selected students should expect to work with NIDA mentors September through May of an academic year. During Winter break, students may have the opportunity to work up to 40 hours per week.
