Morgan State University Joins Netflix Pathways Bootcamp to Expand Technical Career Readiness Opportunities for Students
No-cost Online Training Programs in Software Development and Data Science are Now Open to Rising MSU Juniors and Seniors for Fall 2022
BALTIMORE — In an effort to increase proficiencies in data science and software development among students pursuing careers in technology, Morgan State University has partnered with Netflix Pathways Bootcamp for intensive tech-focused training in core competencies related to high-demand user interface and software design industries.
These no-cost, online training programs are offered in partnership with Netflix (NFLX), the world's leading streaming service, and 2U, Inc. (TWOU), the parent company of leading online learning platform edX. The program's mission is to diversify and accelerate the careers of the next generation of tech leaders. As Maryland’s Preeminent Public Urban Research University, Morgan is the seventh HBCU and/or Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI)—and the first in Maryland—to join the Netflix Pathways Bootcamp program, which will be exclusively available to rising juniors and seniors (as of Fall 2022) in eligible majors.
“Affording Morgan students access to enrichment opportunities beyond our curricula and classroom instruction, in addition to offering 1:1 mentorship with seasoned tech professionals is invaluable,” said Hongtao Yu, Ph.D., provost and senior vice president of Academic Affairs at Morgan. “Industry-relevant training workshops, like Netflix Pathways Bootcamp, are crucial in cultivating diverse talent and advancing critical skills for students pursuing careers in the highly competitive technology jobs market—Morgan is pleased to be among the institutions currently offering this very beneficial training program.”
Starting August 2022, Morgan and Netflix will offer part-time bootcamps in software development and data science to Morgan juniors and seniors in eligible majors. Those who complete the 16-week course will receive credit upon completion of the program. Applications for Morgan’s Netflix Pathways Bootcamp Fall 2022 programs, including the Advanced Data Science Bootcamp and Advanced Java Bootcamp, are now open through 11:59 p.m. EST on May 6, 2022, at netflix.2u.com, with classes beginning August 16, 2022.
For Morgan students interested in learning more about the Netflix Pathways Bootcamps, there will be a special information session held on April 26, 2022, from 12– 1:15 p.m. EST.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, only 19.2 percent of the more than 88,633 bachelor’s degrees awarded in the computer and information sciences field in 2019 went to students who identified as Black or Hispanic. Stronger connections between higher education and the workforce are one way to help close this persistent diversity gap.
“Bridging the gap between college and career is difficult, especially for students who do not have access to industry relevant technical skills and professional mentors,” said Victor Scotti, Jr., program manager of Emerging Talent at Netflix. “We're excited to welcome the Morgan State Bears so that we can work together to expand access to technical career pathways.”
Course materials for Netflix Pathways Bootcamp have been developed by 2U in partnership with subject matter experts across the Netflix Product organization. Students in the programs partner with seasoned employees on Netflix’s engineering, data teams. Beginning in Spring 2023, Morgan students will be able to take advantage of additional bootcamp workshops dedicated to UX/UI design. Working together, students gain industry insights and key learnings through regular 1:1 mentorship sessions, as well as dedicated support services and career coaching from 2U’s expert team of advisors.
“With Netflix Pathways Bootcamp, 2U is serving as the bridge between a world-class company and world-class non-profit universities to help accelerate the careers of our future tech leaders,” said Jennifer Henry, SVP of Workforce Engagement at 2U. “We're looking forward to working with Morgan State and Netflix, leveraging our shared expertise in order to deliver holistic, high-quality learning opportunities for the next generation.”
