Morgan State University Provost Selected for American Association of State Colleges and Universities 2022 Academy for New Provosts
Hongtao Yu, Ph.D., provost and senior vice president for the Division of Academic Affairs at Morgan State University was recently named to the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) 2022 Academy for New Provosts (ANP), a leadership development program geared towards addressing the distinctive needs of provosts who lead state colleges and universities. Provost Yu is one of 30 higher education leaders participating in ANP’s third cohort.
Based in Washington, D.C, AASCU’s membership includes nearly 400 public colleges, universities, and systems whose members share a learning- and teaching-centered culture, a historic commitment to underserved student populations, and a dedication to research and creativity that advances their regions’ economic progress and cultural development.
Through ANP, newly appointed provosts are presented with an opportunity to connect with peers within their respective state in tailored environments that are specific to the challenges first-time provosts are likely to face. The ANP professional enrichment agenda for 2022 will cover such topics as managing university finances and budget; using data effectively to inform decisions; integrating academic planning with budget, facility, and IT planning; and strengthening psychological and physical resilience.
The 2022 ANP will be delivered in a blended format and include monthly virtual learning and networking sessions through May 2023. The course content will be facilitated by national experts on topics of relevance to provosts at AASCU institutions.
Provost Yu was appointed to his current leadership role at Morgan in September 2021. Before that, he served as dean of Morgan’s School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences (SCMNS). In this role, he is credited with guiding SCMNS into becoming one of the fastest-growing schools at Morgan. With more than 30 years of postsecondary education experience, Dr. Yu is an accomplished academic and research chemist with a portfolio that includes facilitating innovative strategic and academic program growth, shared governance, research development and interdisciplinary research, as well as program and research-focused grant funding.
Congratulations Provost Yu on your selection and continued commitment to positioning Morgan as a foremost institution of higher education rooted in academic excellence, intensive research, innovation and the advancement of qualified graduates who are prepared to lead.
