Morgan State University Celebrates Outstanding Student Academic Achievements and Professional Endeavors

BALTIMORE — In recognition of exceptional achievements in diverse academic disciplines, Morgan State University acknowledges the remarkable accomplishments of those who are excelling in the classroom and beyond the borders of Morgan’s “National Treasure” campus. The students spotlighted below exemplify the Morgan spirit and commitment to growing future leaders prepared to compete on the world stage. Their outstanding contributions and successes highlight the exceptional standards and thriving learning community at Morgan.

Economic majors Crystal Eke (Sophomore) and Champion Ojo (Junior) were selected to attend the 2024 Expanding Diversity in Economics Summer Institute (EDE). Both will learn more about advanced microeconomic research and practical economic analysis to equip themselves to tackle real-world challenges as a part of the EDE 2024 Cohort of 45 student scholars from colleges and universities from across the nation. Organized by the Becker Friedman Institute for Economics at the University of Chicago and the Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy at the Brookings Institution, this year’s EDE Summer Institute spans three weeks which began on June 6 and concludes on June 29, 2024. The in-person program will consist of two weeks of residential programming at the Becker Friedman Institute on the University of Chicago campus, followed by one week of residential programming in Washington, D.C., hosted by the Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy at Brookings.

Crystal was also elected as the communications liaison to the National Economic Association (NEA) Student Chapters Electoral Board. The NEA was founded in 1969 to promote the professional lives of minorities within the profession.

Tavon Thomasson, a rising senior pursuing a degree in  Multimedia Journalism within the School of Global Journalism and Communication (SGJC), has been chosen to participate in the Forbes HBCU Scholars Program. His goal is to become an international news correspondent, and he is eager to apply his academic knowledge in a practical setting while improving his reporting and analytical abilities. The Forbes HBCU Scholars, first introduced in 2021 as the Forbes Fellows program, aims to provide opportunities for HBCU students and graduates to work in the Forbes newsroom each summer, offering a pathway for diverse students to enter the journalism industry. Participants in the 8–12-week fellowship program receive a deep grounding in financial and general news reporting, obtain firsthand experience and training on fast-paced news stories, and cultivate their passion as emerging Black and brown journalists working alongside senior Forbes editors and reporters.
