AGB Institute for Leadership & Governance in Higher Education Names Morgan State’s Dr. Uttam Gaulee to Class of 2024
Intensive Learning Program Will Prepare New Cohort of Aspiring Presidents for Successful Leadership in Higher Education
The Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB) announced Uttam Gaulee, Ph.D., professor of Advanced Studies, Leadership, and Policy: Community College Leadership Development within Morgan’s School of Education and Urban Studies (SEUS), has been selected to the 2024 cohort of the AGB Institute for Leadership & Governance in Higher Education. Dr. Gaulee will join 27 ascending leaders from institutions around the country for a six-month learning experience designed to prepare them for leadership and governance in higher education. Now entering its fifth year, the AGB Institute has become a known and respected program for leadership cultivation and bolstering the pipeline of qualified and diverse candidates for university presidents and chancellors. This cohort will begin their five-part intensive with an in-person symposium in Washington, D.C. in September 2023.
According to a recent American Council on Education report, 2023 American College President Study, the average tenure of college presidents has increasingly diminished within the last decade or more. To create a larger pool of qualified leaders, and to meet the needs of the changing student demographic, AGB aims to address the challenges of the evolving landscape of higher education through its Institute for Leadership & Governance and other like-minded programs. The institute features more than 30 higher education expert presenters including current and former presidents, trustees, search consultants, and other sector professionals. During the program, participants will focus on several principal areas of study which include building effective relationships with members of the Board of Trustees; engaging with government and education policy officials; marketing and crisis communications; fundraising and fiscal management; creating vision and strategy; and an opportunity to participate in a shadowing experience with a sitting president.
Since its inception, the institute has shown incredible success, which is reflected in the demonstrated achievements of its fellows. To date, 18 of the past participants have become presidents or chancellors of higher education institutions, and many other participants have successfully progressed on the pathway to the presidency with commendations and new positions.
A policy analyst, published author, and higher education subject matter expert, Dr. Gaulee has devoted over two decades of his academic and professional life to advancing and promoting solutions related to student success, workforce development, and institutional effectiveness. A longtime devotee and scholar of international education, Dr. Gaulee’s research interests include the significance of community college, diaspora studies, interdisciplinary perspectives on education policy, global citizenship, and cross-cultural issues in international development and geopolitics. He is a previous Fulbright (2010) award recipient and is actively involved with the Journal of Underrepresented and Minority Progress, which he founded and serves as its editor-in-chief. Dr. Gaulee serves as president of the Society of Transnational Academic Researchers (STAR) Scholars, which advances global social mobility through innovative research and progressive advocacy efforts.
Congratulations Dr. Gaulee on your outstanding achievement of being chosen to participate in this highly selective program and for representing the “National Treasure” among leaders of higher education.
