Master of Arts in Journalism

The Master of Arts degree program in Journalism is designed to ensure that students are receiving the education, skills and experiences needed to be successful journalists in the 21st Century. It is solidly grounded in knowledge-based journalism, which is multi-disciplinary and designed to train journalists to report on the kinds of complex issues facing today's world. The multi-disciplinary approach allows students to develop areas of interest in which they want to focus their reporting, e.g., political/social policy, arts and culture, international relations, business and economics, science and technology, health, environment, and urban planning.

Like real world journalism, the program requires that students write and edit for traditional journalism media as well as for digital, online media and social media, mobile applications and other new technologies. Moreover, as with real world journalism, the program requires that students record and edit audio and video material for use across all media platforms.

Graduates of the program will be able to fill the market demand for business reporters, science reporters, political reporters, etc. They will have the advantage of having been trained in the subject area as well as in journalistic skills needed to effectively communicate those subject areas across the variety of media platforms. In an increasingly complex world, journalists who can master subjects and communicate to the general public using multiple media are a valuable resource to the public and crucial to the best functioning of a democratic society.

>The Master of Arts program in Journalism requires students to complete 36 graduate course credits. Included in these credit hours are 9 credits of core courses required of all students in the program, 15 credit hours in the discipline, 9 course credits in a single discipline outside of the SGJC and a 3 credit Master's Project.
