Morgan State University Opera Workshop

Opera@Morgan

Morgan State University Opera Workshop/Opera@Morgan have been offering performance opportunities for students interested in broadening their operatic knowledge and performance experience since 2004. It has presented fully staged productions and concerts with piano and orchestra. We provide students with an opportunity to learn and perform leading and minor roles, as well as opera choruses.  This is a student-centered program that includes mentoring from Morgan alumni and guest artists who have been invited to participate in the production.  Works are performed in the original language.  The Opera Workshop presents the works of European, American, African American, and Latin composers.  Some of our past productions include Amahl and the Night Visitors, Dido and Aeneas, Gianni Schicchi, Highway One USA, Gallantry, The Medium, Anonymous Lover, Lyrics of Sunshine and Shadows, Maria La O, Porgy and Bess, and Suor Angelica to name a few.

The Opera Workshop focuses on historical content, dialogue, character development, language, and style preparation.  We meet each student where they are in their development with the goal of helping them to explore and enhance the range of their skills and talent.

As outreach, Opera@Morgan presents matinee performances open to public school students and senior citizens from the surrounding Baltimore and DMV communities.

Morgan State University has a rich vocal legacy with many of our alumni performing at the Metropolitan Opera and other venues around the world.

The opera workshop is under the leadership of soprano Marquita Lister.
