Douglas Bowles, Assistant Professor in Vocal Studies with a Musical Theatre focus is a
graduate of the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music at The Catholic University of
America, where he received his Master of Music Degree in vocal performance. While at
CUA, Douglas was the first recipient of the Italian American Foundation’s Pavarotti
Scholarship for the Voice. He received his B.A. in Music (Vocal Performance) from
Roanoke College in Salem, VA. Douglas has served on the vocal and musical theatre
faculties of Montgomery College, Rockville; American University; Catholic University
and joins the Morgan faculty after 13 years on the MT Faculty at Howard University’s
Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts. He is also affiliated with the Duke
Ellington School for the Performing Arts, where he teaches classes in Voice for the
Musical Theatre. He is proud to say that former students have appeared on Broadway
(ROCKY, GROUNHOG DAY, MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG, MOTOWN, THE
MUSICAL, SOME LIKE IT HOT and others) on Television (POSE, EMPIRE) and in
national and international tours (RADIO CITY; Various Cruise Ships, Equity and Non-
Equity Tours).
Douglas is a singer, pianist, collaborative pianist, musical director, writer
and band-leader, in addition to his expertise in vocal instruction. Music-directing
highlights include: THE STEPHEN SCHWARTZ PROJECT (Michael Bobbitt and John
Cornelius – with guidance and oversight by Stephen Schwartz); New York Musical
Theatre Festival (Joan Cushing’s Petite Rouge); Dakota Theatre Co. (Always, Patsy
Cline); Kennedy Center PAGE TO STAGE FESTIVAL (Yellow Rose) and KC Terrace
Theatre event w/ Linda Eder & John Lithgow. Internationally, he MD’d THEY SHOOT
HORSES, DON’T THEY for the Volkov Theatre and American University in Yaroslavl,
Russia and TALKING WITH in St. Petersburg, Russia. As a Musical Theatre
Performer, Douglas has been a cast member in 2 Helen Hayes Award Winning Shows:
SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE MYSTERY OF THE PURLOINED PATIENCE
(Durwood Leyley/Hosmer Angel) authored by Nick Olcott for “INTERACT THEATRE
at the FOLGER” & ASSASSINS (Ensemble) for SIGNATURE THEATRE. His
ensemble, TWO FOR A SONG/THREE FOR A SONG is featured throughout the US &
internationally performing re-discovered songs by 1920s and 1930s by composers from
Harold Arlen to Fats Waller to George Gershwin. TWO/THREE FOR A SONG has
appeared on NPR’s ALL THINGS CONSIDERED & on BBC INTERNATIONAL.
Douglas appears on several recordings: NEW DEAL RHYTHM for Shellwood
Records(UK); THE GREATEST SONGS YOU’VE NEVER HEARD for Rivermont
Records; SUBLIMITIES: A CY WALTER TRIBUTE - Harbinger Recorders/ New York
Musical Theatre Project; CHICAGO STOMPERS: THE GREATEST HITS (Milan,
Italy). Doug has enthusiastic reviews from Michael Feinstein, Leonard Maltin, Vince
Giordano & Ethan Morrden (noted musical theatre historian). NEW DEAL RHYTHM
was nominated for a Washington Area Music Award (WAMMY). Doug has sung with
noted theatre organist, Dennis James at the National Gallery of Art & at movies palaces
throughout the mid-west. Doug’s company SingCo Music presents shows he devised:
STUDIO ’37; G.I. JIVE: LETTERS FROM THE WAR; SUTDIO’ 37, and WIRELESS
MEMORIES; & his hot jazz & swing band “Doug Bowles & his SingCo Rhythm
Orchestra.” This multiple Wammy-nominated orchestra has performed at the Glen Echo
Spanish Ballroom (with Jean Veloz); Voice of America, The National Archives, Channel
4 and many others. Doug has appeared with Grammy Award-winning band leader,
Vince Giordano and his Nighthawks (BOARDWALK EMPIRE; THE AVIATOR).
With the American Pops Orchestra for PBS, Douglas appeared in 2024 in “BROADWAY’S
LEADING MEN: A MUSICAL CELEBRATION” backing up noted Broadway Leading
Man Norm Lewis. For the Smithsonian Associates, Douglas has lectured on The Cabaret
Form; Vocal Technique in his symposium FROM GOUNOD TO GAGA, with Kari
Paludan and a Special Presentation on Gilbert Sullivan with Alax Hassan, Kari Paludan
