Biography:

Dr. Lisa Berglund is jointly appointed as an associate professor in the School of Architecture and Planning and the Center for Urban Crime and Violence Reduction. Her research focuses on the relationship between policing and processes of gentrification and displacement. This work explores how policing and police surveillance is often leveraged as an economic development tool, and its role in social exclusion and urban inequality. She also explores the role of 'smart city' technologies that track and trace urban residents as they go about their daily lives, raising questions about privacy, consent, and civil liberties as they relate to these quickly expanding planning tools. The goal of her research is to help shed light on how the fields of urban planning and urban design might confront policing and surveillance, and present alternatives as they attempt to build inclusive cities and neighborhoods.
