Practicum Training Overview

The Counseling Center at Morgan State University (MSU) is committed to providing a nationally competitive professional practicum training program that is designed to prepare trainees for a doctoral level internship or to function as an early career mental health practitioner as well as to align with the strategic goals of the University. Indeed, innovation and preparing practicum trainees to thrive as practitioner-scholars in the field of psychology is the aim.

The practicum training program is led by the following goals: for future counselors and psychologists to have skills critical in delivering culturally informative mental health services to diverse populations, to enhance MSU student success and wellbeing, elevate the campus infrastructure to support operational excellence and to increase overall institutional capacity in the University's commitment to being a premier anchor institution for Baltimore City and beyond. To achieve these goals, a range of services are offered by a multidisciplinary team of providers that include staff psychologists, a clinical social worker and two embedded mental health providers, each for the Athletic Department and for the Office of Residence Life and Housing.

Each practicum trainee is required to be present for two semesters (during one academic year), 8 hours per day - 16 hours per week, to include 5 hours of supervision and didactic training, 9 hours of direct client services and 2 lunch hours. Trainees are expected to complete their onboarding the summer prior to their first semester of their practicum training year and are expected to be on site at the University Counseling Center starting the first MSU business day of September during their training year.

The training program has 6 core components that make up each trainee’s practicum training year and in which each trainee will be evaluated:

  • Individual and Group Supervision
  • Didactic Training
  • Triage-Walk-In/Same Day Consultation
  • Counseling Services
  • Outreach Services
  • Psychological Evaluation Administration (if applicable)
