CICS Students Shine on the Executive Board of Morgan State's Graduate Student Association Relaunch
Morgan State University is thrilled to announce the return of the Graduate Student Association (GSA), an organization dedicated to supporting the academic and personal growth of graduate students across the campus. With a renewed mission to unify, advocate, and enhance the graduate experience, the GSA stands as a voice for graduate students, raising a strong network of support, and promoting academic excellence in the Morgan State community.
Among the schools represented, we are proud to introduce members from the College of Interdisciplinary and Continuing Studies, Levern McElveen (Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Sciences). A notable professional and the President/CEO of Levern McElveen & Associates, LLC, Levern brings a wealth of experience in transit safety, security, emergency management, and operational systems. As a published author and a leader in transit safety culture, he contributes a unique perspective on policy, administration, and governance in interdisciplinary studies. Levern’s vast expertise aligns with the GSA’s purpose to lift the professional and academic standards within Morgan’s graduate community.
Kelly P. Venable (Masters in Interdisciplinary Organizational Policy, Governance, and Administration) Kelly, an academic advisor at the University of Baltimore, rejoined Morgan State in 2024. Kelly returned to complete her master’s degree with a focus on organizational administration. Her background in mass communication and commitment to student success enriched the GSA’s focus on leadership and interdisciplinary collaboration. With her interests in American Modernism and social issues, Kelly aims to influence her role to advance the career paths of her peers and promote cultural action within the Morgan State community.
The Graduate Student Association is committed to fostering a vibrant graduate student community that inspires partnership, leadership, and learning. We look forward to the impactful contributions of our new Executive Board and to increasing the support systems available to our graduate students.
The relaunch of the GSA begins with a newly structured Executive Board that reflects the diverse academic shape of Morgan State’s graduate programs. In a decision made by the Student Affairs Committee, the GSA’s team was crafted to reflect the Graduate Council, confirming representation from each of the university’s 10 schools. These students were carefully selected by senior members of the university. The new 14-member Executive Board, serving from November 2024 to April 2025, is prepared to represent the various interests and concerns of Morgan State’s graduate students.
CICS is incredibly proud of Levern McElveen and Kelly P. Venable for their leadership and dedication to interdisciplinary excellence. Their selection to the GSA reflects the high caliber of our students and their commitment to making a meaningful impact within the Morgan State community and beyond. We look forward to celebrating their continued success as they inspire and lead others in their academic and professional journeys.
