Academic Advising Hold

At the time of admission to Morgan State University, an academic advising hold is placed on each first time freshman's WEBSIS account. This hold prevents you from registering and/or making any changes to your class schedule without first meeting with your assigned academic advisor.

What is the Purpose of the Advising Hold?

The academic advising hold:

  • encourages you to meet with your academic advisor prior to adding/dropping/withdrawing/registering for courses.
  • helps to ensure that you are receiving proper guidance in regards to scheduling, major exploration/declaration, resolving academic challenges, understanding policies and procedures of MSU, and the availability of academic resources throughout campus etc.
  • aids in fostering communication between you and your advisor. For example, if you are interested in withdrawing from a course, the advisor hold ensures that you discuss the challenging course and reasons for wanting to withdraw with you advisor before withdrawing from the course. The advisor will discuss the withdrawal process, deadlines, consequences, and where applicable strategies to improve your performance in the course.

When Will the Hold be Removed?

When you meet the criteria to transition to your advisor within your major, the hold is removed from your WEBSIS account. Until then, the hold is advanced or temporarily lifted each time you meet with your advisor to make a change (register, add, drop, withdraw) to your class schedule.

Transition Criteria

A student must meet all of the following requirements for the first-year advising hold to be removed from his/her WEBSIS account.

    • achieve at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA)
    • earn at least 55 credit hours
