The National Alliance against Disparities in Patient Health (NADPH) has published an important Roundtable Discussion that delves into the vital topic of integrating ethics and equity into Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) infrastructure. Morgan State University was represented by Gabriella Waters, Director of Research and Operations at the Center for Equitable AI and Machine Learning Systems (CEAMLS). This enlightening panel discussion, led by Malaika Simmons, MSHE, Chief Operating Officer of NADPH, is now accessible to our Morgan State University audience and has been shared with the governors of all 50 states, every member of congress, and published in over 130 countries.

The discussion, featured in the prestigious peer-reviewed journal, Big Data, features a group of experts in the field of ethical and equitable AI who have shared their valuable insights on this crucial subject.

The participants engaged in a thought-provoking discussion that included the types of evidence or use cases that can support the development of ethical principles and standards guiding AI/ML infrastructure in health research settings. The conversation also delved into the ethical imperatives that AI/ML infrastructure engineers and system designers should adhere to in their work.

Mrs. Simmons guided the panelists in exploring how the ethical themes present in current engineering systems design literature apply, or do not apply, to the scope and practice of AI/ML engineering and system design.

Dr. Zoran Obradovic, Carnell Professor of Data Analytics at Temple University and Editor-in-Chief of Big Data, expressed his views on the significance of this roundtable discussion. He noted, "Artificial intelligence-based tools have the potential to significantly enhance the quality of patient care. However, the deployment of this technology necessitates the development of clear guidance protocols for its safe and ethical application in healthcare. The challenges discussed in this roundtable, from the perspective of big data, should be considered when developing and deploying such software in clinical practice."

This Roundtable Discussion serves as a critical step toward advancing the ethical and equitable application of AI and ML in healthcare, with the potential to revolutionize patient care and drive positive change in the industry.
