About Us

Program
The Hospitality Management Program is part of the Department of Business Administration in the Earl G. Graves School of Business and Management, Morgan State University (MSU). We are located in the harbor city of Baltimore, Maryland. The city is the home of the Orioles baseball and the Ravens football teams. It is the most exciting and largest hospitality hubs in the state, characterized by its distinct neighborhoods and historical flavor.

With the approval of the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) the program came into being in the fall semester of 1995 offering the Bachelor of Science degree in Hospitality Management with a first intake of 30 students. In 1998, the program was assigned to the Business Administration Department of the Earl G. Graves School of Business and Management (SBM). Under the supervision of the Earl G. Graves School of Business and Management, SBM, the curriculum was revamped to comply with the stringent quality student engagement requirements of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Admissions

First Year Undergraduate Students
For priority consideration and best consideration for merit-based scholarships and invitations to special programs, domestic undergraduate applicants are advised to submit their completed applications by November 15 and January 15 for the fall and spring semester respectively. Other applications will be considered on a space-available basis. For international students, applications are due by December 1.

Criteria Considered in the Application Review Process:

• The student's academic performance in high school
• The rigor of the high school's academic program
• Strength of curriculum
• Honors, AP, and IB courses
• Progression of Performance
• SAT I (combined critical reading and math) and/or ACT scores
• Class rank (if utilized by the high school)
• The student essay
• Quality of content and grammar
• Extracurricular activities
• School counselor and teacher recommendations
• Leadership in school/community activities
• Unique talents and/or abilities may be taken into consideration
• Personal experiences and background may be taken into consideration
• Maryland residency may be taken into consideration
• Alumni affiliation may be taken into consideration

Transfer Students
Students are expected to have a cumulative average of 2.0 from all colleges attended and to be "in good standing" at the last institution attended. In all cases, the transfer student must earn the last 30 credit hours toward the desired degree at the University as a full-time or part-time student.

Graduate Students
Minimum admission requirements include:

• An earned bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
• Undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher but those with between 2.5 and 2.99 may be considered for conditional admission. Post-bachelor's undergraduate credits will not be used to enhance G.P.A. requirements for admission to graduate study.
• Completed, in a satisfactory manner, certain minimum course work in designated areas; the specific courses and amount of work depending upon the field of work which the student proposes to enter.
• Application for admission together with an official copy of transcripts from all institutions attended, including graduate and undergraduate colleges and universities.
• Test scores (for those programs requiring them) on the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT), the aptitude portion of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). Test scores may not be more than 5 years old prior to date of application.
• Three letters of recommendation sent to the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies from officials or faculty members of institutions previously attended who are acquainted with the applicant's ability for graduate study or from employment supervisors where applicable.
• One-page personal statement of academic and professional plans and the reasons for selecting Morgan State University.
• Additional requirements may be prescribed by the individual departments. Final decisions on graduate admissions are made by the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies. Admission to the School of Graduate Studies does not constitute admission to degree candidacy.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

Undergraduate Students
All students applying for financial aid are advised to familiarize themselves with the below specified timeline and processes. However, applying early gives students a better opportunity to receive federal state and local aid.

Timeline
January 1st- FAFSA Available at www.fafsa.gov
 
February- Office of Financial Aid begins receiving and reviewing FAFSA information for awarding and notifying students.
 
March 1st- Maryland State Scholarship deadline to submit FAFSA Morgan State University priority deadline to submit FAFSA.
 
April- Continue to award and notify all students via mail (award letters) for New Students and Websis for continuing students.
Allow 2-4 weeks for non selected and 4-6 weeks for selected. Summer Sessions Financial Aid Apps Available.
 
May- Continue reviewing folders and making awards as FAFSA are received and verification documents are received.
 
June- Continue awarding process. Encourage all new borrowers to complete entrance counseling and master promissory note at www.studentloans.gov
 
July- Continue awarding process.
 
August- Post aid to student accounts 10 days prior to the start of classes.
 
September- Refund list are verified for eligibility. Notify student of revision due to enrollment changes required adjustments or revisions.
 
October- Advise students to review financial aid awards.
 
November- Office of Financial Aid will notify student of all loans canceled if not accepted. 
 
December- All students should check for balances for fall semester. (by subtracting your EFC from the estimated costs for one year of education.)

Graduate Students
Morgan State University provides financial aid to assist students who have received unconditional admission to the School of Graduate Studies. Depending upon available resources and criteria for eligibility, graduate students may receive financial aid in the form of tuition awards, graduate assistantships including teaching assistantships (TAs), research assistantships (RAs), fellowships, scholarships, work study and loans. In certain circumstances, staff employment, including a limited number of positions in the Office of Residence Life, may also be available. In order to apply for financial aid, students must submit a completed Application for Assistantship, Fellowship, and Scholarship form to the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies. The Financial Aid Committee of the School of Graduate Studies reviews applications and/or nominations for financial aid.

To be eligible for financial aid, a student must, as a minimum, be admitted to and enrolled in a graduate program and pursuing a degree on a part-time (i.e., a minimum of 6 but less than 9 credits) basis. Part-time students are not eligible to receive fellowships or graduate assistantships. Graduate students who are pursuing less than 6 credits are not eligible for financial aid. Assistantships, fellowships, and scholarships provided by the University or by the State of Maryland may not be used to pay for auditing courses, registration for excess credit, or for miscellaneous charges such as late fees or parking tickets.

An undergraduate average of 3.0 on a 4-point scale is the minimum average considered for awards form applicants without previous graduate study. Matriculated graduate students and applicants with prior graduate study should present a 3.0 or higher (if required by department) for all graduate coursework.

Application forms for financial aid are due to the School of Graduate Studies by February 1 and October 1 for the fall and spring semester respectively. No awards are made for the summer session.

Housing

Available on-campus residence halls are Baldwin Hall, Blount Towers, Cummings House, Harper-Tubman House, Marble Hall Gardens Apartments, O’Connell Hall, Rawlings Hall, Thurgood Marshall Apartments, Each residence hall has a main area, vending machine, and washers and dryers at cost and in most residence halls, computer labs available for the use by the residents only. In Blount Towers a Convenience Store is operated by the University food service. The University dining facility is adjacent to Rawlings Hall.
