“The Baltimore City Health Department is the oldest, continuously operating health department in the United States. It was formed in 1793, when the governor appointed the city's first health officers in response to a yellow fever outbreak in the Fells Point neighborhood along the northwest branch of the Patapsco River. Since that time, BCHD has worked to improve the health and well-being of Baltimore residents in partnership with agencies, health care providers, community organizations, the media, and our funders.
The Center for a Healthy Maryland (formerly MedChi Foundation) is an affiliate of MedChi, The Maryland State Medical society. The Center’s mission is to advance the practice of medicine, enhance the quality of medical care, and promote the health of the citizens of the State of Maryland. The Center’s programs are directed at the public to improve health status, and also focus on quality improvement and education, with programs for physicians to help them to better serve their patients.
In fulfillment of the Department’s mission to promote the health of all Maryland citizens, the Health Disparities Initiative shall focus the Department’s resources on eliminating health disparities, partner with statewide organizations in developing policies and implementing programs and monitor and report the progress to elected officials and the public. The target ethnic/racial groups shall include African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, Asian Americans and Native Americans
The MHHD Women’s Health Program aims to promote women’s health across the lifespan. The program participates in activities that increase awareness of women's health issues among all Marylander’s including the public, researchers, educators, policy makers and health care professionals. The MHHD Women’s Health Program works cooperatively with other programs within DHMH to address women’s health issues.
The Maryland Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities is committed to promoting the health of men throughout all stages of life. The Office participates in activities that increase awareness of men’s health issues.
