Landscape Architecture

Program Mission

The Graduate Program in Landscape Architecture, in keeping with the university's urban mission, emphasizes the design of sustainable urban environments and communities. The Program focuses on urbanism as a vehicle for studying city processes and the building of communities, utilizing Baltimore City and the Maryland region as a canvas. [EXTENSION]

Issues of urban study include community revitalization, urban ecological systems enhancement, waterfront and post-industrial site revitalization, transportation and infrastructure planning, parks and open space development, and urban/suburban interface redevelopment. [NEW KNOWLEDGE / RESEARCH] 

It is through these study areas and collaboration with others that the Program strives to expand the reach and influence of the urban landscape architecture profession within Baltimore City and beyond. [INTERDISCIPLINARITY] 

The Program is committed to maintaining a nationally recognized urban landscape architecture program. The MLA Program is designed to provide first professional degree students with the requisite design, history/theory, technical and environmental skills necessary to produce innovative and culturally responsive urban landscapes.
