ESL Program Director’s WelcomeDr. Gunn

Welcome to the English as a Second Language Program at Morgan State University!  As Director of the University’s Program in English as a Second Language, I enthusiastically invite you to explore our virtual and home campuses.  Morgan State University is a distinctive institution that I have called home since 2008.  Throughout my career, I have extensively studied, traveled, and lived abroad, and intuitively understand the role of language in cultural, interpersonal, academic, and business success.  One may travel the world and see things; but if one travels the world with language, one knows things.  As we launch Morgan State University’s ESL Program, my aim to is keep our focus on you, the ESL student, so that you may know the English-speaking world, its cultures and its people.

As Maryland’s premier urban institution, we offer instructional excellence through a variety of educational delivery formats and courses to prepare you for your goals.  Whether you are entering into an American college or university, sharpening your English skills for business, or building your confidence in speaking English, our ESL program focuses on you and your success.  Our flexible calendar offers classes in the daytime, evening and weekends to accommodate your schedule, and you may choose between full-time and part-time programs.  As an institution whose historical mission serves minority populations, we are sensitive to those who are learning English as a second or third language.  We are proud of our university’s rich history as a Historically Black University and of our central location on the east coast of the United States.  Also, we are a few minutes from Washington, D.C., just an hour from Philadelphia, and three hours from New York City.  We are committed to immersing our students not only in the English language, but in local and regional culture as well.

I understand that learning a language is much more than a set of rules – it is a dynamic, vibrant experience interdependent upon the culture and people who speak it.  As you explore our programming, you will find that we offer excursions to local museums like the Walters, to spirited athletic events such as Orioles baseball games, and to picturesque areas like Lancaster County, P.A.  We also endeavor to pair our ESL students with students from our undergraduate student body for the mutual exchange of linguistic and cultural experiences.  It is through these exchanges that you might make lasting connections to Morgan State University and to our community.  Thank you for taking a few moments to delve deeper into our ESL program at Morgan State University.  We are excited to meet you and to serve as stewards on your journey toward your specific ESL goal:  our Program in English as a Second Language is focused on you.

Whatever your linguistic heritage and cultural background, we welcome you and hope you join us!

Dr. Elizabeth Gunn, ESL Program Director
