Center for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Education (CEMSE)

Welcome to the Center for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Education (CEMSE) located in the Bannecker Building room 101. CEMSE was established in 1988 with the mission of supporting the enhancement of mathematics and science education in the state of Maryland. CEMSE offers a variety of professional development activities for teachers and academic enrichment activities for students all of which are designed to increase the teaching and learning of mathematics and science.

The Center for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Education (CEMSE) facilitates a number of programs and activities throughout the academic year that include: academic enrichment, professional development in mathematics and science education, technical assistance with teacher certification, and partnerships activities with area schools.


Annual Mathematics- Science-Engineering Fair

For over twenty-five years, the Center for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Education (CEMSE) has organized and hosted the Annual Mathematics-Science-Engineering Fair for Baltimore area elementary, middle, and high school students. This two-day affair provides competition of projects that are judged by mathematics and science educators, researchers, and professionals. Students and their parents are invited to a dinner banquet in which a keynote speaker presents to the audience and the winners of the competition receive awards. The top two high school students get an opportunity to advance and compete in the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).





The CEMSE staff consist of well trained professionals in the areas of mathematics education, science education, and research. Their expertise include: elementary education, chemistry education, mathematics education, science education, earth science research, marine estuarine and environmental science research, and higher education.
