For over 130 years, Morgan State University has been an important part of the higher education system in the Baltimore area, the State of Maryland, and the nation. Throughout its history, Morgan has served the community with distinction while meeting the educational needs of an increasingly diverse society. Its designation as Maryland's Public Urban University assures that Morgan will continue to play a prominent role in Maryland's education future.
Morgan's mission is to serve a multi-ethnic and multi-racial student body and to help ensure that the benefits of higher education are enjoyed by a broad segment of the population. To accomplish this, the University offers a comprehensive program of studies at the undergraduate level and degrees in selected fields at the master's and doctoral level.
A high quality educational program is offered by a full-time faculty of almost 300. In addition, Morgan's instruction is integrated with its research and community service activities to help students comprehend how what they learn in the classroom can be applied to help their immediate community and society as a whole. Morgan's research programs produce important faculty contributions in a wide variety of fields while involving undergraduate students who are motivated and prepared for advanced study. Public service programs give both the faculty and students an opportunity to work with and learn from public schools, business, government, and the general public.
The past fifteen years has been a period of phenomenal growth and accomplishment for the University. Applications for admission have risen dramatically. Enrollments are substantially higher than just 10 years ago. Furthermore, the academic qualifications of entering students have risen steadily.
Thanks to a substantial state investment in equipment and facilities, University faculty members are able to successfully compete for research grants and contracts. Baltimore residents benefit from the State's investment through Morgan's commitment to serving the community. Morgan's Urban Research Institute studies ways to improve the quality of life for local residents. A wide variety of programs are also available to assist public schools by motivating students for academic success and preparing them for the challenges of college.
America continues to grow more racially and ethnically diverse. Morgan's many years of experience in teaching students from a broad range of social and economic backgrounds places the University at the center of today's most important educational issues. Morgan is committed to meeting the changing educational needs of the community and looks forward to maintaining its level of academic excellence.
Many of the University's accomplishments are possible only through the generosity of its friends. In recent years, the Governor of the State of Maryland, the leaders along with many members of the Maryland General Assembly, and the State's Congressional Delegation have been exceptionally supportive of the University. Many in the business community have also been generous with their advice and financial support. Loyal alumni and friends have been active in the University's affairs, and generous in their donations.
We trust that we have begun to repay the investments that these many friends have made in the University.
