Department of Strategic Communication
Public Relations …. Advertising …. Social Media …. Brand Management …. Event Planning
The Bachelor of Science in Strategic Communication (SCOM) within the School of Global Journalism & Communication is designed to equip students with the necessary skills to thrive in careers such as public relations, advertising, brand management, social media, digital content creation, event planning, corporate and government affairs, and other sectors.
SCOM is a nationally certified academic program by the Public Relations Society of America, the leading organization for communications professionals. The Certification in Education for Public Relations (CEPR) was awarded to SCOM in July 2021 after an extensive program review. The CEPR lets employers know that you are receiving a first-class education in SCOM fields and that you are being prepared well for career opportunities that await you when you graduate.
As we work in the information age, new technologies and social media platforms are constantly evolving. Our program ensures that aspiring communication professionals understand the practices and various formats needed to generate mass appeal for their clients, the processes for composing effective advertising and communications campaigns, and how to develop communications strategies to engage diverse populations in a global community.
The Department of Strategic Communication houses the student chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). Also, there is an active chapter of the student American Advertising Federation. Our department engages students to work for “real” clients internally and externally to the university through The Strategy Shop, our student staffed and faculty advised integrated communications agency.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that growth in public relations and advertising jobs will grow by 6% (faster than average) through 2032.
