Department of Multimedia Journalism

The Department of Multimedia Journalism (MMJN) prepares students for digital formats that cover, sports, news, and entertainment. Multimedia students learn how to create onscreen journalism by using video cameras, the smartphones in their pockets and drones. They also will learn how to do audio reports, as well as more in-depth podcasts. Multimedia journalism students learn traditional print style writing, broadcast and audio/podcast writing styles. These skills are supported by learning how to use online research and social media.

Once journalism is put online it instantly becomes international, so our students are taught to think globally when doing their projects. Nevertheless, all news is local, so reporting in neighborhoods, small towns and communities are a mainstay of good reporting. Our students travel to Washington, D.C., New York, Pennsylvania, Utah, West Virginia, as well as Cuba, France, Greece, England, Jamaica, and the African Continent.

The Department of Multimedia Journalism’s faculty has experience with The Washington Post, The New York Times, NPR, MSNBC, ABC News, CBS News, and other major media companies. The faculty includes winners of the Pulitzer Prize and the duPont Columbia award. Such professors prepare our students to become first-class multimedia journalist who can report on stories that inform the underrepresented, the forgotten and those who need to be exposed to the truth.
