Center for the Study of Race and Culture in Sports

Morgan State University’s School of Global Journalism and Communication announced the creation of the Center for the Study of Race and Culture in Sports in 2017. The center provides specific training for students interested in careers associated with sports journalism, sports production and sports strategic communication. The goal is to prepare students to operate as professionals, who are equipped with the requisite reporting, writing and multimedia skills to immediately enter the workforce and compete.

Benefits

Programs and practical skill experiences offered by the Center supplement students completing degrees in the school’s three departments: Multimedia Journalism, Multiplatform Production and Strategic Communication. Students complete training programs, lectures, seminars and symposiums. They also are required to contribute to campus student news outlets – The Spokesman, BEAR TV and WEAA. They are exposed to sports history, sports pioneers, traditional sports journalism methods, and online and digital training that helps them develop into journalists who can excel in a competitive global marketplace.

After students graduate, they will be prepared to cover a sports team or franchise, or work for a college athletic department. They are fully equipped with the tools to cultivate sources, break news, write press releases, host radio shows, operate digital cameras, craft front page features and develop award-winning enterprise stories.
