About GESTAR II

GESTAR II is a NASA cooperative agreement administered by a consortium of partners including University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Morgan State University, Colorado State University, Arizona State University, and Pennsylvania State University, Northrop Grumman Corporation, Earth Resources Technology, Inc., and the nonprofit Southeastern Universities Research Association. GESTAR II primarily supports NASA's Earth Science Division within the Science Mission Directorate. Morgan State's GESTAR II program is currently comprised of 39 Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC)-based scientists and a three-person program office.

GESTAR II's vision is to provide NASA GSFC's Earth Science Division with opportunities to advance Earth science by providing a competitive environment to hire and retain high-quality scientists who are on track to be leaders at NASA, in academia and in industry. GESTAR II exemplifies the power of mentorship, embracing a career development strategy that only a university research center can provide. GESTAR II Consortium supports over 120 researchers who work to create extensive opportunities for breakthroughs in earth and atmospheric science research, carrying out observational, experimental and theoretical research in support of NASA strategic Earth Science mission objectives.

Goddard's Earth Science Division is home to about 200 civil servants and over 1200 collaborating researchers and support personnel., dedicated to studying the Earth as an integrated system that includes the atmosphere, oceans, biosphere, cryosphere, and geosphere. The Division operates as a component of the Sciences and Exploration Directorate that collaborate on interdisciplinary research with the Astrophysics Science, Heliophysics Science, and Solar System Exploration Divisions.
