Center for Climate Change and Health

Mission

Our mission is to reduce the impacts of climate change on health and protect the health of people especially vulnerable population. We also aim to prepare underrepresented minorities students to tackle climate grand challenges and to increase the diversity in climate science and environmental health.

About

Climate change is the biggest global health threat of the 21st century. There are direct (heat waves, droughts, heavy storms, flooding, and sea-level rise), and indirect impacts (vector borne diseases, air pollution, food and water safety, undernutrition, and migration) of climate change on human health. Research agenda focuses on building healthy and climate resilient communities in Maryland and around the world to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

Specific aims:

  • Specific Aim 1. Enhance Morgan State’s research infrastructure and capacity within the areas of climate change and health.
  • Specific Aim 2. Enhance high-quality research, including translational research, on urban climate health and health disparities through increased external funding, publications, and scientific services to the community.
  • Specific Aim 3. Facilitate collaborations between environmental/climate and health faculty researchers and create a collaborative and supportive environment for faculty career development, especially for new and early career faculty.

The proposed center will increase interdisciplinary collaboration among engineers, ecologists, and environmental and public health scientists and train next generation of scientists and leaders with a strong multidisciplinary background and understanding of changing climate and AI/ML solutions.

The center will engage community-based organizations, non-governmental organizations, academia, business, industry, along with state, local and federal governments.

CCH partners include representatives from USDA Agricultural Research Service, Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, Baltimore Department of Health, Baltimore City Department of Public Works, Blue Water Baltimore, the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland Department of the Environment, MSU PEARL, U.S. Forest Service, and U.S. Geological Survey.
